Shantel
Bucovina Vol.1 ep
12" Vinyl
Cat.-No.: AY 02

With "Bucovina" Shantel returns with a very special track. It's the title track of his compilation "Shantel: Bucovina Club" (CD AY 01) and it's based on the melody "Black But Sweet" by the Trinidadian trumpeter Wilmoth Houdini. In the first half of the 20th century, Houdini was a giant of calypso and dedicated "Black But Sweet" to his girlfriend.

Shantel transported the melody onto a market square of the Bucovina, where couples turn to this Trinidad-Rumanian calypso-waltz. Here, a melody crosses cultural borders. An idea that is continued in the great remixes of Sr.Coconut, OMFO and Haaksman+Haaksman, who have moved the melody of "Bucovina" to many different imaginary locations.

Tracklist

A1 Haaksman+Haaksman Soca Bogle
With their very DJ friendly "Soca Bogle Mix", Daniel and Felix Haaksman moved "Bucovina" from Rumania to a Jamaican dancehall where the dancers manically move their hips to the flamenco guitars and the bogle bounce of the Haaksman+Haaksman mix.

A2 OMFO Dub
OMFO, that's Our Man From Odessa, a.k.a. German Popov from the Ukraine who turned "Bucovina" into a very atmospheric dub reggae version.

B1 SenorCoconut Cumbia
Senor Coconut, world known impresario of the tasteful Latin cover version shaped the calypso melody into a cumbia groove. Ay!
