Balkan Beat Box are an intoxicating combination of performance, Dance- and World-infused electronic Music with live musicians from Israel, Morocco, and even Iran with DJ's, Flamenco dancers, Belly dancers, and a VJ, mixing the ecstatic sounds and sights of the Middle East, North Africa, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe. The Balkan Beat Box views music with fresh eyes: as a continuing cultural dialogue. It can take the form of a clash of cultures, and sometimes it is Diasporic in nature. At other times it is Israeli with all the music that lives there - Arabic, Sephardic, Hassidic – a true melting pot with never-ending sources of inspiration. The Balkan Beat Box performs regularly in Israel, where it receives rave reviews and a tremendous audience reaction. This summer BBB presented their music in some of the biggest Festivals in EU and N. America and received a wild reaction and standing ovations.

Balkan Beat Box is best explained as a performance-meets-dance party that generates ecstatic energy by blending electronic music with hard-edged folk music from North Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Their festive evenings also feature colourful costumes and bedecked performers dancing and performing throughout the party. The musical crew which is led by Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat also includes MC, vocalist and percussionist Tomer Yosef, Uri Kinrot on guitar, Itamar Ziegler on bass and special guests the Bulgarian Chicks, Hassan Ben Jaffar, Victoria Hanna, belly dancers, flamenco dancers and more!

Balkan Beat Box was formed in 2003 and is spearheaded by Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat. Tamir and Ori have been active for a decade in NYC's premier underground bands like Firewater, Gogol Bordello, Big Lazy, Shot'nez and DJing around the world and touring with the Balkan Beat Box extravaganza. Tamir Muskat grew up with Romanian and African music in the house. Ori Kaplan grew up playing Klezmer clarinet in Jaffa. Both were playing in the NY scene with various downtown bands for more then a decade. Ori studied with Yuri Yunakov - the king of Bulgarian gypsy sax player and played and toured with Gogol Bordello, Firewater, Shot'nez extensively around the globe. Tamir produced some of Gogol Bordello's, Firewater, JUF, and Big Lazy most memorable music and toured the world extensively. The Balkan Beat Box is a natural progression of their Diaspora experience. Keeping the spirit of extremes and juxtapositions, BBB is coming back to draw from the source.

BIOGRAFIE BALKAN BEAT BOX

Ori Kaplan wurde in Tel Aviv, Israel geboren. Im Alter von 11 erlernte er Klezmer-Stücke und klassische Klarinette in Jaffa. Allerdings spielte er schon bald bei DMX, einer Underground-Band in Tel Aviv, die die Möglichkeiten des Samplers auslotete. 1991 zog er in die Vereinigten Staaten und machte seinen Studienabschluss am Mannes College. Während der vergangenen zehn Jahre lebte er in New York, spielte mit einigen der angesagtesten Underground Bands und nahm fünf Platten bei führenden Labels auf, darunter auch "Knitting Factory". 2001 bekam er den Jerome Foundation Award for Young Jazz Composers. Er schloss sich der Band Gogol Bordello an, die mit ihrem "Gypsy Punk Cabaret" einen unvergleichlichen Boom osteuropäischer Kultur in New York lostrat. Seit 1998 spielt er bei Firewater. Er begleitete viele Studioproduktion und spielte neben vielen anderen auch mit Susie Ibarra, Speedball Baby, Big Lazy, J.U.F., Victoria Hanna, John Zorn, dem Vision Orchestra und William Parker. Mit seiner Band Shaat'nez widmet er sich jüdischer Traditionen und der Kultur des Mittleren Ostens sowie der Sinti und Roma und verschmilzt sie mit zeitgenössischen Einflüssen.

Tamir Muskat wuchs in Tel Aviv auf und arbeitet sowohl als Musiker, als auch als Produzent und Tontechniker. Seine Mutter emigrierte von Rumänien nach Israel, was ihn frühzeitig für verschiedene kulturelle Einflüsse sensibilisierte. 1995 zog er nach New York und wurde Mitglied bei der Band Izabo. Als Drummer und Produzent trat er ein Jahr später der Band Firewater bei. Mit ihr ging er auf Welttournee und veröffentlichte drei Alben, von denen er die letzten beiden auch produzierte. Gemeinsam mit Dan Shatzky gründete er Vibromonk Records. Die Firma entwickelte sich zu einer der wichtigsten Produktionsstätten New Yorks. Tamir produzierte Album mit außergewöhnlichen Künstlern aus aller Welt und kann bereits auf ein vielfältiges Oeuvre blicken. Als Mitglied des Instrumentaltrios Big Lazy veröffentlichte er "The Big Apple's Creme de la Crème". Die "Village Voice" beschreibt das Werk als "ursprünglich, schrill, traurig, wild, wunderschön, dissonant, rein, abgefahren." Das Magazin "The New Yorker" findet die Musik gleichermaßen "elegant, mutig und atemberaubend schön". Big Lazy schrieb einige Filmmusiken und tourte mit den White Stripes, John Spencer Blues Explosion, Reverent Horton Heat, Tom Tom Club und Firewater. 2002 rief Tamir mit drei Mitgliedern von Gogol Bordello das Projekt J.U.F. ins Leben. Deren Electro-Gypsy-Punk elektrisierte ganz New York und schuf mit DJ-Gigs und Remixen für zahlreiche europäische Labels eine ganz neue Sub-Szene.
